Dr. Jorge Valdés is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Life Sciences of Universidad Andrés Bello, at the Center for Bioinformatics and Integrative Biology. He was previously director of the Center for Genomics and Bioinformatics at Universidad Mayor (2016–2019) and director of the Biocomputing and Applied Genetics Division at Fraunhofer Chile Research Foundation (2011–2016), where he led a group of 12 researchers from the biological, computer science and bioinformatics fields.
His career has been recognized with the President of the Republic of Chile Scholarship for outstanding academic performance, the Microsoft Sponsored Research Award and the American Society for Microbiology Travel Award, among others. He has received funding from CORFO, FONDECYT, FONDEF, the Millennium Science Initiative and the CONICYT-BMBF joint program.
He is a founding member of the Ibero-American Society of Bioinformatics and a member of the Chilean Society for Microbiology and the American Society for Microbiology. He has supervised doctoral, master’s and undergraduate theses, and serves as a reviewer for journals such as BMC Genomics, Research in Microbiology and Frontiers in Bioinformatics.
